Who Is Eligible for Hospice Care?

The Basic Criteria

A patient becomes eligible for hospice care when a physician determines that they have a life expectancy of six months or less if their illness runs its natural course, and when the patient chooses to focus on comfort care rather than disease-modifying treatments.

It Is Not Just for Cancer Patients

There is a common myth that hospice is only for people with cancer. That is simply not true. At ProCare Hospice of Nevada, we serve patients with a wide range of advanced, end-stage conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Cancer
  • Cardiopulmonary disease
  • End-stage renal failure
  • End-stage liver disease
  • Neurological conditions
  • End-stage HIV
  • Malnutrition

You Do Not Need a DNR

Another misconception we want to clear up: a Do Not Resuscitate order is not required to receive hospice care. We respect the personal choices of every patient and family. Our role is to honor your decisions and support your goals of care, every step of the way.

Hospice Care Is Always a Choice That Can Change

Patients have the right to stop hospice care and return to curative treatment at any time. If a condition improves or goes into remission, a patient may leave hospice and resume other treatment options. If needed, re-enrollment is possible, and Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurances allow for it.

Where Can Hospice Care Be Received in Las Vegas?

One thing that surprises many families is that care comes to the patient, not the other way around. At ProCare Hospice of Nevada, we provide care wherever our patients call home. That could be:

  • A private residence
  • An apartment
  • An assisted living facility
  • A nursing home
  • A hospital
  • Our inpatient hospice unit

ProCare Hospice of Nevada services most of Clark County, including Las Vegas, Henderson, and Boulder City. Whether your loved one is at home or in a facility, our team comes to them.

The Four Levels of Hospice Care

Medicare requires all hospice providers to offer four distinct levels of care. Understanding these options helps families know what kind of support is available at different stages.

Routine Home Care

This is the most common level of hospice care. It is delivered wherever the patient lives, whether that is a private home, nursing facility, or assisted living community. Our interdisciplinary team provides scheduled visits, and a registered nurse is available 24/7 for urgent needs. Services include symptom control, pain management, assistance with daily activities, emotional support, and spiritual care.

Continuous Care

When a patient is experiencing a medical crisis, such as uncontrolled pain, respiratory distress, or severe anxiety, continuous care may be provided in the home for several hours, up to 24 hours a day, until their condition stabilizes. A hospice nurse will assess the situation and help determine whether this level of intensive, short-term care is appropriate.

Inpatient Care

When symptoms can no longer be effectively managed at home, short-term inpatient care is available at the ProCare Hospice Inpatient Unit. This peaceful, home-like environment provides round-the-clock medical support for patients experiencing acute or advanced symptoms. Our inpatient unit is equipped to care for patients dealing with conditions such as uncontrolled pain, seizures, respiratory failure, severe nausea or vomiting, severe anxiety, and more. Once symptoms are stabilized, patients return to their home setting with continued team support.

Respite Care

Respite care provides short-term relief for primary caregivers who need time to rest or attend to personal matters. Patients can stay at the ProCare Hospice Inpatient Unit for up to five days under Medicare guidelines. During that time, our staff provides full care and comfort, giving caregivers peace of mind. Medicare covers respite care as part of the hospice benefit.

Specialized Programs: Veterans, Pediatric, and More

Honoring Our Veterans

At ProCare Hospice of Nevada, we are a proud Level Four partner of the We Honor Veterans program, developed by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Veterans have unique physical, emotional, and psychological needs at the end of life, and our team is specifically trained to meet them.

We employ veterans who understand firsthand what others like themselves have experienced. We also maintain a dedicated Veterans Room in our facility to ensure every veteran in our care feels honored and seen. Our Veterans Recognition Ceremonies pay tribute to the service and sacrifices of veterans and their families, with each veteran receiving a special Certificate of Appreciation.

We know the cost of service to our country can never be fully repaid. We are committed to making sure every veteran in our care receives the care and recognition they deserve.

CareOusel Pediatric Hospice

The needs of a child in hospice, and the needs of their family, are different in many ways from those of adult patients. Our CareOusel Pediatric Hospice program is built around an elite team of pediatric and hospice-trained caregivers who provide specialized, hands-on care in the home.

Any child diagnosed with a terminal illness from the prenatal stage to age 21, whose pediatrician or specialist agrees that hospice-level care is appropriate, may be eligible for CareOusel care. Our perinatal program even allows us to become part of a parent’s care team prior to birth if a diagnosis is made in utero.

Our focus for children in our care is compassionate pain and symptom management, along with as much quality of life as possible. We do all we can so that parents can be parents, kids can be kids, and families can be families.

CareOusel care includes therapies designed to support the mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being of young patients and their loved ones, including music therapy, massage therapy, and more. We also offer sibling legacy programs and tangible legacy items to help children understand and cope with loss.

Holistic and Complementary Therapies

We believe medicine alone is not enough. At ProCare Hospice of Nevada, we offer a range of complementary therapies, including massage therapy, music therapy, aromatherapy, and more.

Bereavement and Grief Support

Grief does not end when a loved one passes, and neither does our care. The ProCare Hospice of Nevada Bereavement Program is designed to support individuals and families after loss, and it is available to all members of the community, even if their loved one was not on our hospice service.

Grief can also begin before a loss occurs. Our team walks beside families throughout the entire journey, offering counseling, spiritual care, and guidance long before a final goodbye.

How to Get Started with Hospice Care in Las Vegas

Starting the conversation about hospice is often the hardest step.

Anyone Can Make a Referral

You do not have to wait for a doctor to bring up hospice. Referrals can come from medical case workers, friends, family members, chaplains, social workers, or even the patient. A physician’s prognosis of six months or less is needed to begin care, but anyone can initiate the conversation.

No-Obligation Information Visits

If you are unsure whether hospice is the right step, we offer no-obligation information visits to help patients and families understand their choices. There is no pressure, and no paperwork until you are ready.

What Happens After You Call

Once a referral is made, we schedule an appointment to meet with the patient and family. Our admissions nurse evaluates the patient, answers all questions, and begins creating a care plan that reflects the patient’s and family’s wishes. When everyone is ready, the hospice team begins visits.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I know when it is time to call hospice?

Hospice care is typically appropriate when a physician has determined that a patient has a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness follows its natural course, and when the patient and family are ready to shift the focus from curative treatment to comfort. If you are unsure, we offer no-obligation information visits to help you understand your options without any pressure. You can also call us at any time with questions.

2. Does choosing hospice mean we are giving up?

Not at all. Choosing hospice is choosing quality of life. It means the focus shifts from curative treatment to making sure every day is as comfortable, meaningful, and peaceful as possible for the patient and everyone who loves them.

3. Can a patient leave hospice if their condition improves?

Yes. Hospice care is always a choice, and that choice can change. If a patient’s condition improves or goes into remission, they can leave hospice and return to curative treatment at any time. If circumstances change again in the future, re-enrollment is possible under Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurances.

4. Is hospice care only available at a facility?

No. Hospice care is provided wherever the patient calls home. For most people, that means care comes directly to them, whether at a private residence, assisted living community, or nursing home. ProCare Hospice of Nevada also has an inpatient unit available for patients whose symptoms require more intensive short-term support, but the goal is always to keep patients in the setting that feels most like home.
